About Stone Carving
Stone carving is a part of India’s rich cultural heritage. It has evolved over centuries in the hands of craftsmen who are descendants of the great builders of the famous temples of Lingaraj, Jagannath, Konark and other prehistoric temples.
Although no one from Shyam Sundar’s family has practised the art of stone carving, he takes pride in the fact that he has learned the art from the people who were in this profession since generations. He has been a stone carver since 2007 and plans to pass on his knowledge to the next generation.
Stone carving takes long hours of hard work. But what drives Shyam and the 200 odd artisans that work with him in the district of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, is passion.
Some of these sculptures take 6 to 24 months to complete. The biggest hardship for Shyam and the fellow artisans is the lack of knowledge and awareness about the craft amongst people due to which they find it hard to get the right price for their products.
Biswa Bangla, with their strong credence of making a wider platform for these artisans have successfully incorporated designs and product diversification to create appealing products for contemporary customers.
