About Nettle Fiber Products
Nettle is an Eco-friendly fibre characterised by its flexibility and excellent tensile properties. The thread is from the Himalayan giant nettle plant grown between 1200-1600 meters. Its moisture content results in effective insulting capacity. During the 2nd World War, nettle fabric was used to line the jackets of the soilders so that they could be insulated from cold.
In Sittong village of Kurseong, West Bengal. Two families, are hand spinning this yarn, and some small quantities are being woven in the Doers area. They are trying to develop the yarn domestically for the Indian and global market.
Through Biswa Bangla field visits and discussions with the Khambu Rai Board the yarn for these products have been sourced from Kurseong and converted into sarees, bed covers, cushion covers, in combination with linen and cotton in fulia Woven nettle fabric has been sourced from Doers for nehru jackets.

Embroidery:

- Missing yarn, slobs and uneven yarn contrasts are general phenomena in hand-woven products. This is a natural outcome and inherent characteristic of the hand-weaving procedure which makes the products all the more unique and beautiful.
