About Bengal Handspun – Handwoven in Nadia & Murshidabad
Handspun Sarees are a closely woven, unbleached or white cloth produced from carded cotton handspun yarn. It originated in Bengal, from where it travelled to Europe in the 17th century. Muslin clothing is suitable for hot, dry climates.
West Bengal produces nearly 55% of the muslin produced in India. Efforts are being made to revive the fine muslin that was known worldwide. So far it has been possible to spin and weave 500-count muslin which is comparable to the famous Bengal muslin. The whole process needs a lot of skill and patience and only a very small quantity of 500 count muslin is produced in some areas of West Bengal.
The West Bengal Government has initiated Project Muslin to revive the weaving of higher count muslin. Under this project, more than 600 families with skilled spinners and weavers have been identified in Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum, Bardhaman, Hooghly, Malda and Paschim Medinipur.
