BENGAL DOKRA
Dokra is renowned worldwide for its primeval simplicity and captivating folk motifs. This traditional craft, practised primarily in Bikna (Bankura) and Dariyapur (Bardhaman), has acquired Geographical Indication (GI). The craft uses the ancient ‘lost wax casting’ (cire perdue) technique – one of the earliest methods of non-ferrous metal casting – allowing artisans to create unique and intricate metal works. Through design intervention, product diversification and market linkage interventions, Biswa Bangla, a Government of West Bengal enterprise, has empowered Dokra artisans by enhancing their skills, increasing their income, and sustaining their livelihood throughout the year.
