About Baluchari
Baluchari, the widely admired silk saree is a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bengal and has a history of over 200 years. It is characterised by its intricate designs that often depict scenes from India’s ancient epics and mythology. The sophisticated hand-weave and colour harmony make Baluchari an object of desire.
The younger generation of traditional weaver families had been opting out of this craft as the Baluchari weave is technically difficult but not that remunerative. Biswa Bangla has worked hand in hand with hundreds of Baluchari weavers and artisans in the district of Bankura for design improvement and product diversification to cater to the contemporary connoisseur.
